I make my own worm chow in bulk to feed my large herd of red wigglers. I use these three ingredients:
Whole dried corn(deer corn), alfalfa pellets, and soybean meal. I mix at a ratio of 60% corn, 20% alfalfa, and 20 percent soybean meal. I mix all of these ingredients thoroughly and store my worm chow in a galvanized can to keep pests out. You can also store the feed in any other airtight container. Most store-bought worm chows have cornmeal as a base with other ingredients added. Bulk worm chow is no longer easy to acquire, so to ensure that your worms remain healthy, it's best to make your own worm chow. Other easily available feeds such as chick starter and chicken egg layer crumbles, can only be used as a short-term feed or in bins that have all the castings removed on a regular basis. Long term use of chicken feeds in bins that are not regularly harvested can result in the death of your worms. Chicken feed contains salt which can accumulate in your bedding after being fed for an extended period of time. This excess sodium will harm or kill your worms.
To pulverize the corn and alfalfa pellets, you need a pretty strong grain mill. Here's the one I use to get a real fine consistency (like cornmeal) for my worm chow. Worms greatly benefit from worm chow that has a smaller particle size that will allow for quick consumption.
